Know the Most Common Types of Cancer

Know the Most Common Types of Cancer

By Diana Rodriguez | Medically reviewed by Lindsey Marcellin, MD, MPH
More than 200 types of cancer have been identified, but do you know which are the most common? Learn about the 10 cancers that affect the most Americans each year.

It's estimated that more than 11 million people in the United States have some form of cancer. There are more than 200 different types of cancer, although many are quite rare. The following are the 10 most commonly diagnosed cancer types in 2009 and the estimated number of cancer patients affected by each:

1. Non-melanoma skin cancer. Affecting more than 1 million people a year, skin cancer can form in the skin cells on any part of the body, though most commonly on skin that’s been exposed to the sun. There are several types of skin cancers, including squamous cell skin cancer, found in the flat cells on the top of the skin, and basal cell skin cancer, found in the round cells deeper inside skin's outer layer. Most commonly, skin cancer affects older people or people who have a compromised immune system.
2. Lung cancer. Roughly 219,440 cases of this deadly cancer were diagnosed in 2009. Lung cancer strikes the cells inside the lining of the lungs. There are two primary types of lung cancer — small cell and non-small cell lung cancer. Lung cancer claims nearly 160,000 lives annually.
3. Breast cancer. This type of cancer will affect 194,280 people in 2009. This is by far the most common cancer in women, says Len Lichtenfeld, MD, deputy chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society. While the overwhelming majority of breast cancer patients are women, about 1,900 cases are diagnosed in men each year.
4. Prostate cancer. Just over 192,200 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed annually. Dr. Lichtenfeld says that this is the most common cancer to affect men, most often men over age 50. The prostate gland is a part of the reproductive system in men and is found at the base of the bladder, near the rectum. This type of cancer develops in the tissues inside the prostate gland.
5. Colorectal cancer. There will be about 146,970 new cases of colon and rectal cancers combined in 2010. The colon is part of the large intestine, which helps to break down and digest food, and the rectum is the end of the large intestine that is nearest the anus.
6. Bladder cancer. Nearly 71,000 people will receive this diagnosis in 2010. The bladder can be affected by cancer cells that develop within its tissues. The most common type is transitional cell carcinoma, but others, such as adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, may also occur, depending on which bladder cells are involved. Read more

Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

By Chris Iliades, MD | Medically reviewed by Pat F. Bass III, MD, MPH
Erectile dysfunction in old age is common, but what do doctors look for if a young man is struggling with ED? Learn about the common causes of ED in young men.

A lot of men might expect to deal with erectile dysfunction later in life. Half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 experience occasional erectile dysfunction, and the frequency and severity of ED both increase with age. But what if you're a man under age 40 wrestling with it? Turns out, you're not alone.

A 2013 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine evaluated 439 men for erectile dysfunction and compared ED causes and frequency in men 40 or younger to men over 40. They found that 26 percent of the younger men had ED. Although these men were healthier and had higher levels of testosterone than the older men, they were more likely to be smokers or to have used illicit drugs. In almost half of the younger men with ED, the ED was considered severe.

"We used to think that ED in young men was 90 percent psychological, but we now know that most cases are caused by a combination of risk factors. Erectile function depends on hormones, blood supply, nerve function, and psychological health,” said Run Wang, MD, professor of urology at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and director of sexual medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Treating Erectile Dysfunction With Heart Stents

Treating Erectile Dysfunction With Heart Stents

Some surgeons are now using tools typically used to widen arteries and pump more blood to the heart to treat a very different problem: erectile dysfunction.

Seventy percent of men with erectile dysfunction have some form of atherosclerosisarterial blockage — that may prevent blood from flowing to the penis. This is why surgeons are now looking to stent procedures as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, according to cardiologist Mehdi Shishehbor, MD, of Cleveland Clinic.

In the Cleveland Clinic program, if a doctor suspects an arterial blockage is preventing a man from having erections, the first step is to order an angiogram of the pelvis to identify the blockage, then insert a stent into the affected artery. The stented arteries are in the pelvis, not in the penis itself, and the procedure takes about an hour. Some patients are able to have sex the next day. Read more

Gain Weight, Lose Your Sex Life?

Gain Weight, Lose Your Sex Life?

By Leon Vorobeichik | Medically reviewed by Farrokh Sohrabi, MD

Erectile dysfunction is commonly attributed to obesity, and both can sink your sex life. Find out why you should take control of your weight to regain your libido.

Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is one of the most common chronic conditions men face. It's estimated that 18 million men older than 20 experience it to some degree. Yet those numbers don't lessen the anxiety you feel when it happens to you.

Men experience ED in different ways, but in general, erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection for desired sexual activity. Though various things can cause ED, there's a consistently strong connection between obesity and sexual dysfunction - obese men are 2½ times more likely to experience ED than those of normal weight.

Obesity refers to body weight that is far above what is considered healthy. However, you could start to notice a variety of health issues, including ED, by being just 30 pounds overweight.

Obesity and Erectile Dysfunction: A Real Downer

The effects of weight gain on your sex life are twofold. First, obesity predisposes you to cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis - cholesterol deposits on the walls of blood vessels that impede blood flow to your organs, including the penis. Second, obese men have lower levels of testosterone, a male hormone vital to sexual function. This affects the ability to achieve erections because you need testosterone to increase the availability of nitric oxide, a blood vessel dilator in penile tissue.

In fact, the connection between heart health and sexual health is so strong that erectile dysfunction can often be the first sign of cardiovascular disease in overweight men. Researchers at the Institute of Cardiology at the University of Milan found that nearly all men who had coronary artery disease had experienced ED an average of 2 to 3 years before developing heart symptoms. Also, doctors at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio found that because of its connection to obesity, erectile dysfunction may be a predictor of future heart attacks and strokes. Could the Economy Be Ruining Your Sex Life?

Could the Economy Be Ruining Your Sex Life?

By Amy Levin-Epstein

Being unemployed, underpaid, or over-stressed can contribute to erectile dysfunction and drag down your sex life. Here's how to help your relationship bounce back.

Suspect your partner’s recent work woes may be working their way into your bedroom? You may be right, according to experts who say that the economy and erections are closely linked.

“We know that stress is one of the major causes of erectile dysfunction, and there have been few greater stressors in our lifetimes than the economic downturn that we are now starting to emerge from,” says J. Stephen Jones, MD, chairman of the department of regional urology at the Cleveland Clinic.

And while we’re all concerned about money (and mortgages, and job opportunities, and saving for college, and more) the psychological impact on men, on the whole, may be greater than for women. “Because career is a big part of men’s identities, being jobless or under-employed makes many men experience feelings of inadequacy. The impact on sexuality and sexual performance is self-evident,” says Jones.

And while the once, um, flaccid economy may be starting to turn around, there are still aftershocks. “I see stress from new jobs affecting men, especially new jobs that aren’t paying as much as old ones,” says sex therapist and board-certified sexologist Debra Laino, DHS, and author of Eleven Reasons Why Women Cheat.

Here are the four biggest ways that work and money woes can wreak havoc on your partner's sexual performance and — and how you can help your relationship recover from economy-related ED. Read more

Why STDs Are Skyrocketing Among Older Adults

Why STDs Are Skyrocketing Among Older Adults

By Katie Kerns, Senior Editor
Grownups these days! As STD rates rapidly increase among the 50-and-older set, experts are trying to pinpoint why.

According to recent research, there’s one particular age group that may be in need of safe-sex refresher courses — and it’s probably not the group you’d expect: Older adults.

The rate of sexually transmitted diseases among 45- to 65-year-olds has skyrocketed in recent years, researchers from Kings College and Saint Thomas’s Hospital in London reported on Thursday in the Student British Medical Journal.
In fact, statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that, among 45- to 65-year-olds, STD rates have nearly tripled over the past decade.

Take syphilis, for example: ABC News reports that in 2000, there were 885 known cases of the infection among this age group, according to CDC statistics. In 2010, however, there were more than 2,500 cases. Chlamydia cases have climbed too — from 6,700 in 2000 to more than 19,000 in 2010 — and rates of gonorrhea and HIV diagnoses have also increased.

What’s going on? The researchers aren’t exactly sure, but they have pinpointed a few potential culprits. Read more

The Anatomy of an Erection

The Anatomy of an Erection
By Diana Rodriguez | Medically reviewed by Pat F. Bass III, MD, MPH

You might not think twice about the process by which a penis becomes erect ... until you have trouble having an erection or achieving orgasm.

Most of the time, and for most men, erections http://www.dreddyclinic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=6148 come naturally and with little or no effort. But a number of physical and emotional factors are involved in the process of getting and maintaining an erect penis long enough to achieve satisfaction for you and your partner during sexual intercourse. When one or more of these processes aren’t working, the result can be erectile dysfunction (ED)http://www.dreddyclinic.com/findinformation/ee/erectiledysfunction.php.

Anatomy of the Erect Penis

The penis has three main structures: the corpora cavernosa, the corpus spongiosum, and the tunica albuginea. The corpora cavernosa, which is filled with sponge-like tissue, extends the entire length of the penis. The tunica albuginea is the membrane that covers and protects the corpora cavernosa. The corpus spongiosum, in the middle of the penis, houses the urethra, the opening at the end of the penis through which a man urinates and ejaculates. There is also a network of tissues, muscles, arteries, and veins running through the penis, which allows it to fill with blood and stiffen for an erection.
A man achieves an erect penis from stimulation, such as touching or rubbing the penis, or seeing or thinking about something sexually stimulating and exciting. When stimulation occurs, the brain takes over and works with the nerve endings in the penis. The brain and nerves send messages to the penis to relax, resulting in increased blood flow to the veins and arteries in the penis.
The blood fills the penis, leading to pressure that is contained and supported by the tunica albuginea. Blood entering the penis is essentially locked in by the supporting tissues and membranes, which allows the pressure to be maintained, creating and holding an erection. The testicles also release the hormone testosterone, which play a role in determining when an erection happens and how firm it is.
An erection goes away when the penile muscles tighten up and stop blood from flowing into the penis. This usually happens after orgasm or once the stimulation is no longer present. Read more

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a medical illness that causes strange thinking, strange feelings, and unusual behavior. The disease can cause you to withdraw from the people and activities in the world around you and to retreat into a world of delusions or separate reality.
Schizophrenia is a kind of psychosis, which is an impairment of thinking in which the interpretation of reality is abnormal. Psychosis is a symptom of a disordered brain.
There's often no cure for the illness, but by working closely with a psychologist and other mental health professionals, schizophrenia can be managed successfully - especially with an early diagnosis. Fortunately, newer medications continue to make this poorly understood disorder more manageable. Read more

A Brief History of the Invention of Livatrex®

Livatrex® is the result of unparalleled ancient wisdom reinterpreted in the light of modern equipment and analysis.

The history of Livatrex® is based on our Spagyrex® process which was invented during my research on the root cause of disease. I found that all disease is caused when the body becomes so contaminated with toxic residue from our daily lives that our own internal self-healing mechanism is suppressed. These toxins come from air, food, water, beverages, harmful organisms, stress, radiation and many other potential sources.

This led us on a journey to create the most powerful herbal liver cleanse product on the market. It all started by studying the works of the most famous 16th century healer, scientist and alchemist, Paracelsus. Read more
